The Chicago Blackhawks made sure one of their key young defensemen won’t be sitting out when training camp opens. On Wednesday night, the team announced a two-year, $3.4 million contract agreement with Wyatt Kaiser, ending his status as a restricted free agent.
Young defenseman secures his spot ahead of training camp
The 23-year-old is now clear to join the team on the ice Thursday as Chicago begins preparations for the 2025-26 season.
Steady growth on the blue line
Kaiser showed steady improvement last season, setting career highs with four goals, 93 blocked shots, and 54 hits across 57 games. He also chipped in four assists, proving to be a reliable piece of the Blackhawks’ defensive group.

Drafted in the third round in 2020, Kaiser made his NHL debut in March 2023 and quickly carved out a role as a depth defender. The Minnesota native has appeared in 98 career games, tallying four goals and 14 assists. His first NHL goal came against the New York Rangers on January 5, 2024.
What the deal means for Chicago
For the Blackhawks, this contract is about locking in a developing defenseman at a manageable price while they continue a long-term rebuild. With veterans and prospects battling for ice time, Kaiser offers a mix of physical play and shot-blocking that coaches value in a middle-pairing role.
As Chicago hits the ice for camp, Kaiser now has a chance to build on last season’s progress and push for even more responsibility in the lineup.
