The easy thing to do when the Washington Commanders released their unofficial depth chart earlier this week was to dismiss it as not really mattering.
That's what everyone who is believing in Jacory Croskey-Merritt wanted to do, because he was listed as RB4.
He certainly wasn't treated like the No. 4 running back in the preseason. He sat out the finale with Austin Ekeler, suggesting they'd be the top two RBs. And the Commanders traded away Brian Robinson Jr., clearing space for the rookie known as Bill.
But what if that isn't the full story?
What if, instead, this ends up like the Dallas Cowboys and Jaydon Blue in Week 1?
That's what social media posters wondered, if Blue was just the appetizer.

Blue was listed as RB3 on the Cowboys' depth chart leading into their Thursday night opener, but that too was dismissed as relatively meaningless.
And then when inactives came out 90 minutes before the game, Blue was a healthy scratch.
That suggested that the depth chart did in fact mean something.
Teams don't necessarily use those unofficial depth charts the same, so JCM could have no link to Blue.
But there's a chance the link exists.
Croskey-Merritt was a seventh-round pick in April. It's not a guarantee by any means that he plays in Week 1.
Everything pointed toward a solid role for him until the RB4 designation.
Now, Washington fans and fantasy football players wait to see if Croskey-Merritt is a surprise scratch, too, or if he's ready to roll.
