One of the best ways to help out a young quarterback in the NFL is to surround that player with other talented players, specifically receivers, who can make the QB’s job easier. The Tennessee Titans could look to do that with Cam Ward over the offseason.
Ward, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2025 draft, has turned in a promising rookie campaign. There were some to-be-expected struggles early on, but he’s looked better as of late. On the season, he’s thrown for 2,866 yards and 13 touchdowns, compared to seven interceptions.
Titans named as potential destination for George Pickens
One player that the Titans could potentially try to pair with Ward is Dallas Cowboys star receiver George Pickens, who is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after the season.
The expectation is that the Cowboys will make a move to keep Pickens in Dallas, potentially via franchise tag. If they don’t though, other teams will have an opportunity to sign Pickens, and the Titans were recently listed as a top landing spot by Moe Moton of Bleacher Report.
Moton pointed to the emergence of Ward, combined with the potential for a high volume of targets as reasons Tennessee could prove intriguing to Pickens.
“Despite an underwhelming pass-catching group, rookie quarterback Cam Ward has shown promise in recent weeks, throwing for six touchdowns and just one interception in his last three outings,” Moton wrote. Pickens may not have Tennessee circled as a primary destination among his desired landing spots, but he may consider it given Ward's progress and the potential target volume atop the Titans' depth chart.”
The Titans signed Calvin Ridley to a four-year, $92 million contract in March of 2024 hoping that he would serve as their top receiver, but things haven’t quite worked out that way. While Ridley did eclipse the 1,000-yard mark last season, injuries have limited him to just seven games and 303 receiving yards this season. Pickens would represent a clear upgrade there.
The Titans are projected to have the most salary cap space in the league over the offseason, so they could certainly afford to lock Pickens on a major deal. But, they also have other needs including cornerback, edge rusher and along the offensive line. So, they’ll have to figure out the best way to allocate their cap space.
If Pickens does make it to the open market though, the Titans should certainly be a team to keep an eye on.
