The Seattle Seahawks made a ton of changes this offseason, as the team moved on from a bunch of pivotal players but were able to replace them with solid contributors. The big moves were trading Geno Smith and then signing Sam Darnold, trading DK Metcalf and then signing Cooper Kupp, letting Dre'Mont Jones walk and then signing DeMarcus Lawrence.
Though Seattle has had an active offseason, they could still make some splash moves before the season kicks off. Pro Football Network's Hayden Victoria believes the Seahawks should try to pull off a blockbuster trade for Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons.
Seattle has a strong roster but lacks a true game-changing edge rusher. With significant cap space after recent moves, the Seattle Seahawks could make a bold play for Parsons to anchor their defense for years to come.
Parsons is set to hit free agency next offseason and is seeking an extension from the Cowboys. However, it doesn't look like owner and general manager Jerry Jones is in any rush to get a deal done with his superstar defender, as Jones recently told Jori Epstein of Yahoo that he hasn't talked to Parsons in four or five weeks.
“I haven’t talked with him in about four or five weeks, and of course, that’ll be necessary if he’s going to get a [new] contract,” Jones told Jori Epstein of Yahoo. “But he’s got a contract. That’s the point. Be sure and clear about that.”
It doesn't look like Parsons appreciated Jones' comments, as the four-time Pro Bowler skipped voluntary OTAs this week, a sign that he may be getting frustrated with the franchise's lack of urgency in contract negotiations.
Dallas would be foolish to trade Parsons, but the team could consider the possibility if they can't sign the All-Pro pass rusher to a new deal. If that scenario transpires, the Seahawks should aggressively pursue Parsons. The 26-year-old is one of the most dynamic defenders in football and has been a dominant force since entering the league in 2021, posting double-digit sacks in each of his first four seasons.
Adding Parsons to Mike Macdonald's defense would take the unit to another level and could elevate Seattle to the favorites in the NFC West.
However, acquiring the Penn State product won't be easy. The Seahawks would have to send premium draft capital to the Cowboys, likely a first-round pick and more, and they would have to sign Parsons to a lucrative extension.
Spotrac projects the 2021 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year's next contract will be worth $145 million over four seasons, which is an average annual salary of $36.3 million. His new deal could be even higher, given that Myles Garrett signed a contract worth $40 million per year with the Cleveland Browns in March.
Making a trade for Parsons would cost a lot, but it would be well worth it for Seattle. However, it's still hard to envision a world where Parsons isn't a Cowboy for the long term, though contract negotiations between the two sides are something to monitor.
