The San Francisco 49ers have had two quarterbacks play this season.
There's the big money guy, Brock Purdy. And there's the former first-round pick, Mac Jones.
Purdy has been QB1 when healthy this season, but on Monday night in Week 12, that wasn't pretty.
The former Mr. Irrelevant threw three first-half interceptions against the the Carolina Panthers.
It brought to mind a wondering: What's going on with Jones?
Why did the 49ers bench Mac Jones for Brock Purdy?
Jones lost the starting job to Purdy when Purdy came back from injury.
That was always the plan.
Purdy is the 49ers' franchise QB. Jones is just the backup and was playing while Purdy was hurt.
Jones played eight games with Purdy out before Purdy returned in Week 11.
In that time, Jones was 5-3, completing 69.6% of his passes for 13 touchdowns compared to six interceptions.
There were some who wondered if Kyle Shanahan would stick with Jones, but he couldn't really do that, not after Purdy got a $250 million contract this offseason.
Jones is under contract through 2026 in San Francisco, so his future could have more playing time in it. Just not right now.
