It's one of the rarest occasions in the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers are on the hunt for a new head coach after Mike Tomlin stepped down after their 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round.
It ends his 19-year run as the lead man in Pittsburgh, and now the franchise is on the hunt for someone else to make a similar run.
Multiple candidates are in the running for the prestigious job. From Brian Flores to Chris Shula. In the midst of these conversations, the Steelers have requested to interview a San Francisco 49ers coordinator.
Steelers request to interview 49ers' defensive coordinator Klay Kubiak
The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported on Thursday night that the Steelers have requested to interview San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak.
Kubiak, 37, is one of three sons to Super Bowl-winning head coach Gary Kubiak.
The offensive coordinator has spent five seasons with the 49ers. In his first season with the team (2021), Kubiak was the team's defensive quality control coach before being promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach for two seasons (2022-2023).
In 2024, he would become the offensive passing game specialist for the season and then became the 49ers' offensive coordinator for the 2025 season.
With key injuries to players like Brock Purdy, Brandon Aiyuk, and others, Kubiak was able to help lead San Francisco to being a top 10 team in total yards per game (351.4), points per game (25.7), while finishing top five in passing yards per game (244.5).
The Steelers are the first team in the NFL to have shown interest in hiring Klay Kubiak as an NFL head coach.
