The San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks have had a rough go of it to start the 2025 season.

While they're winning and producing gaudy numbers, the injuries have started to pile up. Brock Purdy has already missed three games with a toe injury, and backup Mac Jones has been wearing a brace on his knee along with a litany of other ailments.

With Purdy sidelined for a few more weeks, Jones was supposed to hold down the fort for San Francisco while the starter recovered. But after this week's practice reports, the former Alabama quarterback's status for their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has been put into question.

Mac Jones officially questionable for Sunday's Bucs game

It was revealed this week that Jones suffered an oblique injury during last week's Thursday Night Football victory over the Los Angeles Rams. It has prevented him from fully participating in practice.

"Monday, Jones didn't throw at all. On Wednesday, he threw, but the 49ers listed him as questionable. Then on Thursday, he threw a few soft tosses and then shut himself down. Which means the only people throwing passes during practice were third-string quarterback Adrian Martinez and quarterbacks coach Mick Lombardi," wrote Sports Illustrated's Grant Cohn.

Jones is clearly dealing with some serious discomfort and or pain that could prevent him from suiting up against Tampa Bay.

"Working through it," Jones said to the media via Cohn. "Like I said, got a plan with the training staff and been getting treatment every day and trying to do everything I can. Sleep, eat, do the little things, and everyone else is doing the same thing. So that's NFL football."

If Jones can't go on Sunday, the 49ers will be down to third-string quarterback Adrian Martinez, who has yet to take a single snap in a regular season game.
