This is what a backup quarterback is for.

The San Francisco 49ers have lost starting QB Brock Purdy to a multi-week toe injury. And that means it's time for backup Mac Jones, new to the 'Niners for this season, to step in and start, beginning with Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.

It won't be Jones' first rodeo. He has started games for the New England Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Now with San Francisco, it'll be up to Jones to help a 1-0 start turn into more wins and not a sudden downturn.

Mac Jones' record as a starter

Mac Jones has a career 20-29 record as an NFL starting quarterback.

It began well, with a 10-7 mark as a Pats rookie.

But then he went 6-8 in 2022 and 2-9 in 2023 with New England.

In 2024 with Jacksonville, Jones made seven starts with Trevor Lawrence out and went 2-5.

Mac Jones' stats

Mac Jones has appeared in 52 NFL games, 49 of them starts.

He has completed 65.9% of his passes, never dipping below 64.9% in a single season.

He has 54 touchdown passes compared to 44 interceptions.

In 2024 with the Jags, Jones threw eight TDs and eight INTs.

Jones isn't much of a runner. In his career, he has 145 carries for 419 yards (2.9 ypc) and two touchdowns.

When was Mac Jones drafted?

Mac Jones was the No. 15 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots.

That's the same draft the 49ers traded up to get Trey Lance at No. 2 overall.

Who will be Mac Jones' backup QB?

The 49ers currently had Purdy and Jones on the 53-man roster.

They have one QB on the practice squad: Adrian Martinez, who was once a top recruit to Nebraska but is now just a depth piece.
