49ers sign former 1st-round pick to contract after season-ending loss image

The San Francisco 49ers' season came to an end over the weekend in a blowout defeat to the Seattle Seahawks

Now, they're looking ahead to next season and preparing their roster already.

One move teams make after their seasons end is to sign available players to reserve/future contracts, which keep them around for the offseason.

The 49ers signed a bunch of those deals on Tuesday, according to the league's transaction log, with the most notable potentially being Eli Apple.

Apple, the cornerback, was the No. 10 overall pick by the New York Giants in 2016.

He's 30 years old now, a long way removed from his top-tier days at Ohio State.

Still, though, a former first-round pick is a former first-round pick.

Apple played two-and-a-half seasons with the Giants, then a couple years for the Saints.

He has since played for the Panthers, Bengals, Dolphins, Chargers and 49ers.

It was just two games with the 'Niners in 2025 for Apple, who made a single tackle.

In his career, Apple has played in 104 games, nabbed six interceptions, defensed 61 passes and made 384 tackles.

He won't be expected for a big role with the 49ers, but he's got enough experience and pedigree to push for a roster spot next season.
