49ers' bust Trey Lance is getting another chance to start at QB in NFL image

The San Francisco 49ers never made the most of their decision to trade up and draft quarterback Trey Lance.

But this week, the athletic QB will get a chance to start in the NFL once again.

It'll be for the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 18 against the Denver Broncos.

The Chargers announced Monday that star Justin Herbert won't start against the Broncos. That leaves Lance, the regular backup, to get the call.

L.A. Can't win the AFC West Division but has already clinched the wild card. They've decided that the health of Herbert is the most important thing.

That gives Lance a shot to prove himself.

No one has ever questioned Lance's physical tools. He's got a big arm and great mobility.

But he never put it together on a consistent basis with the 49ers, and injuries didn't help his cause, either.

Lance has since spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and now with the Chargers.

He played very well in the preseason this year, which actually earned him the QB2 job over Easton Stick, who they got rid of.

Now, Lance will get a chance to reap the rewards here. He'll get the start against a good defense, and if Lance plays well, it could be a big step toward his NFL future.
