49ers' Brock Purdy gets disappointing $55 million contract update image

Brock Purdy is going to get paid, but maybe it won't be as much as he hopes.

That's what ESPN's Peter Schrager said Tuesday on The Pat McAfee Show in regards to the San Francisco 49ers' contract negotiations with their QB.

"I don't see Brock Purdy making north of $55 million," Schrager said. "I don't see Brock Purdy being one of the highest-paid quarterbacks."

Purdy would have to top $60 million in average salary to set the new record there.

While he doesn't seem like the type to re-set the record, that's often how these quarterback negotiations wind up going. Each new guy has a tendency to set a new record.

If the 49ers don't want to give Purdy the record, it could lead to a hold-up in the negotiations.

"Is $50 million the right number? Is $48 million not the right number?" Schrager wonders. "... These are open conversations, but I don't think this is the Justin Herbert deal or the Trevor Lawrence deal."

Schrager says the 49ers might opt to be "fiscally smart," especially in this offseason of getting rid of a lot of key contributors.

Purdy might be the one who winds up with the short (albeit still super large) straw.
