The Pittsburgh Steelers' 2025 season is now in the books after a tough loss to the Houston Texans on Monday night in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
At the age of 42, Rodgers showed he's still got some gas left in the tank this season after proving to be an upgrade for the Steelers following a dreadful campaign from Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in 2024.
However, his age is also a reason to wonder if Rodgers might retire following the 2025 season. Rodgers said that was a possibility before the start of the season, although he has also made it clear coming back for another year is possible.
Here's what we know about Rodgers' future with the Steelers.
Will Aaron Rodgers retire?
There is still no definitive answer on what Rodgers will do, and quite frankly he may not even know at this point. Rodgers will likely take some time to contemplate his future, and we would expect a decision to come before free agency begins.
Here's what Rodgers said during a June 24 appearance on The Pat McAfee Show:
"I'm pretty sure this is it (my last season)," Rodgers said. "That's why we just did a one-year deal. Steelers didn't need to put any extra years on that or anything. This was really about finishing with love and fun and peace for the career that I've had. I played 20 freaking years. It's been a long run and I've enjoyed it. What better place to finish than in one of the cornerstone franchises of the NFL?"
But Rodgers has also left the door open to return.
“Obviously, I’ll talk to my wife. Hopefully, that’s a decision down the line," he said. "I’m not really going to talk about it right now."
Will Aaron Rodgers return to Steelers?
Rodgers has expressed his love for the Steelers on several occasions, so it stands to reason he would seriously consider coming back if he doesn't retire.
However, Rodgers also noted that he expects to have one or two options in free agency if he does play again, so it doesn't appear he's a lock to return.
"I'm thinking about this week, but obviously I'm 42 years old and I'm on a one-year deal," he told reporters last month. "So you know what the situation is. Whenever the season ends, I'll be a free agent. So that'll give me a lot of options if I still want to play. I mean, not a lot of options, but there'll be options, I would think, maybe one or two, if I decide I still want to play.
"I've enjoyed this experience, and everybody in Pittsburgh has been fantastic to me on and off the field," Rodgers added. "And it's really what I was hoping for this experience was, it's been even better than I was hoping."
When it comes to the Steelers, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the team wants him back for another season, so Pittsburgh's feelings on the veteran signal-caller are clear.
