Head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers is a position that has been held by very few men over the past half-century. The Steelers have had just three head coaches since 1970. The organization will now look to identify a fourth.

Following Mike Tomlin’s decision to step down from the role, his predecessor, Bill Cowher reacted to the news.

“I just found out about it just a very short while ago,” Cowher said. “Listen, it’s a special place. Mike has done a fantastic job there. Integral part of that community... He made a decision today, but I think he also probably had, probably made a decision prior to today.

"[You don’t] make that kind of a quick decision like that without giving a lot of forethought. And I’m sure he has with [wife] Kiya and his family. I wish him nothing but the best. He’s been a tremendous head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The way he represented that organization.”

Cowher coached the Steelers from 1992 to 2006 and finished his tenure with a 149-90-1 regular season record and a 12-9 mark in the playoffs. He led the team to a victory in Super Bowl XL, which was the fifth Lombardi trophy in franchise history.

Tomlin took over from Cowher in 2007 and continued his predecessor's pattern of success. Tomlin leaves Pittsburgh with a 192-117-2 regular season record and an 8-12 record in the postseason. He led the Steelers to the sixth title in franchise history in Super Bowl XLIII.
