DK Metcalf’s two-game suspension triggered a major contract loophole that could allow the Steelers to wipe out $45 million in future guarantees. On paper, Pittsburgh now has the power to move on from Metcalf with little financial penalty.
But they aren’t planning to use it.
According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, the Steelers have already reaffirmed their commitment to Metcalf for 2026 and beyond. League sources say the team intends to keep him as a core piece of its future rather than use the suspension as an escape hatch.
There is still a small financial question regarding a portion of Metcalf’s signing bonus that applies to 2025, but there has been no indication that the team plans to pursue repayment.
There is also a legal wrinkle: even though the contract says guarantees are automatically voided after a suspension, teams usually must formally notify players in writing to make that official. Skipping that step can open the door to grievances later.
For now, all signs point to the Steelers choosing stability. Despite the contract technicalities, they plan to move forward with Metcalf as part of their long-term plans. And from a football standpoint, the decision makes sense.
Metcalf is still just 28 years old — firmly in his prime — and while his start to the season was uneven, he has surged during Pittsburgh’s current three-game winning streak. With the Steelers sitting at a 93 percent chance to win the AFC North and host a playoff game, they will need Metcalf at full strength when the postseason arrives.
Just as important, Pittsburgh cannot afford to create an even bigger hole at wide receiver. Letting Metcalf walk would leave the roster with a massive need at the position heading into the offseason — one that would be difficult and expensive to fill.
In short, keeping Metcalf isn’t just about loyalty or contracts. It’s the smartest football move for a team built to win right now and stay competitive long term.
