One of the last things you ever want to see on a football field is the cart, as that has historically meant a player has suffered a significant injury.

According to multiple reports, former Pittsburgh Steelers and current New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields was carted to the locker room during Thursday's practice with an apparent lower leg injury.

Zach Rosenblatt of The Athletic notes that the injury happened after Fields threw a pass in 11-on-11. It appears to have been a non-contract injury based on his description of what happened.

"New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields dropped back for a pass during 11-on-11 drills and threw an incomplete pass to Jeremy Ruckert during training camp Thursday — then promptly dropped to the ground. After a few minutes, he walked off the field with a trainer carrying a heavy limp and went to a medical tent," Roseblatt wrote.

"After a few minutes, Fields was taken into the locker room on a cart. A team doctor spoke to general manager Darren Mougey as Fields was being taken inside," he added.

The team has not provided an update as of this writing, but Rosenblatt notes head coach Aaron Glenn will speak after practice.

If we're keeping the glass half-full here, we've seen teams utilize the cart more and more in recent years, even when a player doesn't have a significant injury.

And, while it doesn't mean he doesn't have a significant injury, the fact that Fields was able to walk is a positive.

Fields inked a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets to become their starter after the team parted ways with Aaron Rodgers. Tyrod Taylor is his backup.

Fields went 4-2 as the Steelers' starter but never got another chance after that once Russell Wilson returned from injury.
