Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris made his debut with the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday night against the Kansas City Chiefs and it was disappointing to say the least.
For the first time in his career, Harris did not start, as the Chargers gave that nod to rookie running back Omarion Hampton, who carried the ball 15 times for 48 yards and caught two passes for 13 yards.
Hampton not only out-touched Harris 17-2, he also out-snapped the veteran, 50-11. Harris finished the game with one carry for five yards and one catch for five yards.
While it remains to be seen if this will be the norm for Harris, there is reason to believe it won't be.
Harris suffered an eye injury in a fireworks accident in July and missed all of training camp and the preseason. It's very possible the Chargers were just easing him in after having missed so much time during the offseason.
Whatever the case may be, it looks as though Harris isn't going to have the kind of workhorse load he did in Pittsburgh thanks to the presence of the first-round pick, who is clearly going to be involved quite a bit. In his four years with the Steelers, Harris totaled above or close to 300 touches per year.
We'll see if Harris gets more involved when the Chargers travel to Las Vegas to take on the Raiders in Week 2.
