Tell me if you've heard this before: the Pittsburgh Steelers have a problem at left tackle.
Broderick Jones is in his first full season as the starter at left tackle after Dan Moore left in free agency, but Jones has been awful thus far.
Jones has given up four sacks and nine pressures through three contests and his 47.5 Pro Football Focus pass-blocking grade ranks 78th out of 101 offensive tackles.
Jones didn't give up a sack in Week 3, so that was nice to see. However, he did give up a few pressures and registered his worst pass-blocking grade in a game this year (36.7).
In the latest episode of his podcast, Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger made it quite clear he doesn't have much faith left in the third-year offensive lineman.
He also predicted that Steelers great James Harrison would go off on Jones if the two were to face off in Harrison's heyday.
“No sacks, congratulations,” Roethlisberger said of Pittsburgh's offensive line in Week 3. “Aaron still got hit a bunch. There’s a play where Broderick Jones is standing completely upright, and the guy basically runs right through him.”
“You can’t stand upright as a tackle," Roethlisberger added. "You’ve got to get low because guys are just gonna get underneath you. James Harrison, what did he talk about? Leverage. If James Harrison were to go against Broderick Jones, he would have 15 sacks a game… Broderick has to be better at protecting.”
While we'd normally be on the side of giving a young player like Jones more time, the fact of the matter is he has been bad since 2024 and there has been nothing to suggest Jones is getting better. In fact, he looks like he's regressing.
If this keeps up, the Steelers would be wise to give Calvin Anderson or Troy Fautanu a look at left tackle.
After all, neither one could be any worse than Jones, who is one of the league's worst at the position.
