It’s clear that bolstering the defense was a priority for the Philadelphia Eagles heading into the NFL trade deadline, as the Birds made a trio of trades aimed at improving on that side of the ball.

The Eagles added cornerback Michael Carter II and a 2027 7th-round pick from the New York Jets in exchange for wide receiver John Metchie III and a 2027 6th-round pick. The Birds also traded for cornerback Jaire Alexander and a 2027 seventh-round pick from the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick that belonged to Denver originally. Lastly, they added edge rusher Jaelan Phillips from the Miami Dolphins for a third-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The trade deadline is now over, but that doesn’t mean that there are no other avenues for outside improvement. There are still a plethora of productive players available via free agency, and the Eagles were recently listed as a best fit for free agent safety Justin Simmons by Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report.

“The Eagles would also make a lot of sense, especially given their status as buyers at the deadline,” Knox wrote. “Simmons played for both defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and defensive backs coach Christian Parker during his time in Denver.”

While the Eagles did add to the defense at the deadline, they didn’t do anything at the safety spot, specifically, and Simmons could provide some added depth there. His previous experience with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio could contribute to a smooth transition if Simmons were to sign in Philly.

This isn’t the first time that the Eagles have been mentioned as an ideal landing spot for Simmons. In fact, such speculation dates back to April of 2024, at least. In April of this year, Simmons even mentioned the Eagles as a desirable landing spot.

Simmons has yet to suit up this season, so he should be fresh and ready to go if he does ultimately sign with the Eagles, or elsewhere.
