The main storyline heading into the Monday Night matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Chargers has been the health of Chargers star quarterback Justin Herbert.
Herbert fractured a bone in his left hand against the Las Vegas Raiders last week and the injury required surgery. Even though the injury was to Herbet’s non-throwing hand, it could still impact his ability to hold the ball and receive snaps from under center. Plus, there’s always the possibility of re-injuring the hand. As a result, his status for the game against Philadelphia has come into question.
Justin Herbert preparing to play against Eagles on Monday Night Football
The sixth-year QB was listed as a limited participant at practice throughout the week, and he’s officially listed as questionable for Monday night. However, Herbert himself wants to suit up and he’s preparing to play.
"The plan is to prepare as if I'm going to play and see how the next couple of days goes," Herbert said last week. "Do everything I can to be out there for the team and the guys out there."
It sure sounds like we should expect to see Herbert out on the field against the Eagles, though his official status will be revealed at some point before kickoff. If Herbert is unable to go, backup quarterback Trey Lance will slide into the starting spot for L.A.
On the season, Herbert has thrown for 2,842 yards, 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He's led the Chargers to an 8-4 record, which is second in the AFC West behind the 11-2 Denver Broncos.
In addition to Herbert, the Chargers will also be getting a boost in the backfield as rookie running back Omarion Hampton is expected to play against Philadelphia. Hampton has been sidelined since Week 5 due to a fractured ankle.
