Jordan Davis' future with Eagles called into question by ESPN insider image

The Philadelphia Eagles have invested a lot into their defensive line, especially on the interior, where top draft picks Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis reside.

It's not clear whether they'll be making any more investment into Davis, though, when his contract is up at the end of this season.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell called into question Davis' future with the Eagles in a new article on Thursday.

"It's fair to suggest that the Eagles were hoping they would land a more consistently dominant player when they used the 13th pick on him in 2022," Barnwell writes. "It seemed telling that an organization that is routinely more aggressive than just about any other in football when it comes to signing its young players to extensions chose to simply pick up Davis' fifth-year option as opposed to signing him to a long-term deal."

Because the Eagles have Carter, they can likely be more cautious with overpaying Davis. They don't need  him, per se.

"Davis has had more splash plays this season, and he has managed a career-high three sacks, although those were all on snaps in which he chased down a scrambling quarterback," Barnwell writes. "Playing more than 50% of the snaps for the first time as a pro, Davis is clearly a good player. Coming off a game in which the Eagles allowed the Bears to run for a whopping 281 yards, though, a defensive collapse would hurt Davis' chances of landing a contract more in line with that of a great player this offseason."

Whether or not Davis comes back to Philly could depend on how his market develops elsewhere.

If another team is willing to pay Davis like a former top-15 pick who has shown some potential, the contract could get too rich for the Eagles.

If he stays in a more affordable range, maybe Philadelphia does bring him back to continue the partnership with Carter.
