The outside noise was palpable as the Philadelphia Eagles prepared to face Patrick Mahomes and the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.

But as the national media clung to Philly’s lackluster passing stats and overwhelmingly predicted a Chiefs three-peat, the Eagles rallied behind their quarterback who personifies the slogan “winning over everything.”

The Eagles recently released footage of Hurts’ speech to his teammates on the night prior to Super Bowl Sunday, and it’s sure to give fans goosebumps no matter how many times they’ve seen it.

“Last time being here, this s— changed my life,” Hurts said. “It changed my life and it changed my mentality, and it changed everything. I left that m— so empty. So long, you know, I was seeking what I would do when I got this moment again, on the biggest stage, everybody watching. Don’t s— else matter but winning. Just take it one play at a time. Let it come to you. And ask yourself how you want to be remembered.”

The rest is history, of course, as Hurts backed up everything he said by winning Super Bowl MVP. The Eagles pummeled the Chiefs into submission, at one point leading 34-0 late in the third quarter in what ended up being a 40-22 final. Philly’s starters were pulled with three minutes remaining in regulation, which is almost unheard of in a Super Bowl.

The Is Jalen Hurts a top-five quarterback? narrative is sure to continue into 2025 and beyond, but the Eagles and their fans can sit comfortably knowing they have one of the game’s premiere winners at the most important position in sports.
