The Philadelphia Eagles have been in good hands under GM Howie Roseman’s now 15-year tenure, with the hits in free agency and the draft far outweighing the misses, especially over the past five years.
Roseman has never been afraid to act boldly, so despite his proven track record, he has some big-time whiffs on his resume.
The Bryce Huff debacle is up there, as Philly will end up dropping around $25 million for one horribly unproductive season. While the Eagles didn’t need Huff to win the Super Bowl, and the team is about to get out of his brutal contract with the added bonus of draft pick compensation from San Francisco, the whole situation is a big “L” for Roseman no matter how you slice it.
When it comes to trades, fans may point to the Jahan Dotson move last summer as a blunder (if they’re casual fans who don’t fully understand the WR3 role in Nick Sirianni’s offense). Bleacher Report, however, recently tabbed a much more prominent decision as Roseman’s worst trade of the past 10 years.
Philly’s deal with the Detroit Lions for Golden “Showtime” Tate early in the 2018 regular season ended up being a waste of a third-round draft pick.
“The Eagles didn't get much in return either,” analyst Kris Knox wrote. “Tate caught 30 passes for only 278 yards and a touchdown in eight appearances. Philly bowed out in the divisional round, and Tate signed with the rival New York Giants in the offseason.”
Eagles fans certainly weren’t complaining at the time. Philly was coming off its first Super Bowl title, and Roseman was simply looking for a spark during the team’s repeat bid with Carson Wentz back under center. The Eagles’ WR corps of Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Algholor and Jordan Matthews needed a kick that year, and Tate just didn’t pan out.
The silver lining? If the Eagles aren’t looking like a Super Bowl contender in 2025 as expected, Roseman will almost certainly take another swing in the trade market to try and propel this year’s repeat bid.
Philly could have 13 draft picks in 2026 after the Huff trade is processed, so we can almost count on it.
