There's certainly no way the Philadelphia Eagles saw this coming.

Just 10 days ago, the Eagles sent a sixth-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens for cornerback Jaire Alexander and a seventh-round pick.

On Tuesday night, though, a report emerged indicating that Alexander might retire.

This is what The Athletic's Dianna Russini wrote on X:

"Eagles CB Jaire Alexander has informed the team he is stepping away from the team to focus on getting right physically and mentally, per source. The 28-year-old is contemplating retirement."

It's been an odd season for Alexander.

Previously a star with the Packers, Green Bay released him before the season.

As a free agent, Alexander latched on with the Baltimore Ravens. He suited up in Week 1, but then the Ravens began to scratch him, saying the he wasn't quite right physically and needed to heal up.

Baltimore never found a way to reincorporate Alexander, and so his trade before the NFL's deadline made sense.

Philadelphia needed a guy like Alexander. They've gotten stellar outside cornerback play from Quinyon Mitchell, but the other boundary corner spot has been terrible, with Adoree Jackson the most frequently used among a bunch of overmatched choices.

Alexander, if healthy, would've been expected to take that role over opposite Mitchell.

Instead, it's not clear whether Alexander will ever suit up for the Eagles at all.

This year has evidently been a trying one for Alexander. He likely didn't imagine he'd be on a third team since July. It's not generally a path traveled by star players.

But Alexander's NFL downfall has come quickly. And now, his entire future in the league is in doubt.
