How long was the Super Bowl national anthem in 2023? Chris Stapleton hits betting under image

Bettors are eagerly awaiting the answer to one critical pregame prop bet question before they can get on with their Super Bowl 57 fun. Did anthem singer Chris Stapleton go over or under the expected time for his performance?

Seven of the last eight national anthem performances at the Super Bowl have hit the over, so many were expecting that Stapleton would do the same.

However, sportsbooks accounted for this and, as such, the over is higher than usual.

That left bettors torn about which side to take. Many with knowledge of Stapleton's slower-paced style took the over, but others wondered whether betting on an anthem of longer than two minutes and seven seconds was safe. It seemed like a true 50-50 proposition.

Sporting News tracked the result of Stapleton's performance. Below is a breakdown of Stapleton's anthem performance and how it has compared to other performances over the history of the Super Bowl.

How long was the Super Bowl national anthem in 2023?

The 2023 Super Bowl national anthem unofficially lasted two minutes and one second, from the start of the first word song to the end of the final held note. That lasted well under the two minutes and seven second set as the official over/under bet by most sportsbooks.

Chris Stapleton was this year's anthem performer. The 44-year-old is a prolific songwriter and has been credited with writing over 170 songs, including six chart-topping country singles. The country star is best known for his rendition of "Tennessee Whiskey," and he has received eight Grammy Awards during his career.

What was the Super Bowl national anthem over/under?

  • Over 126.5 seconds: -130
  • Under 126.5 seconds: -110

During the 2022 Super Bowl, it was anticipated that Mickey Guyton's anthem wouldn't last long at all, as she was known for performing it briefly. Sportsbooks set the over/under at 95 seconds and go burned, as it ran for 111 seconds.

This year, they are taking the opposite approach, which is sensible. Stapleton is known for long, drawn-out performances and for finding ways to slow things down to suit his raspy, melodic voice. As such, this anthem could end up dragging out.

That said, the anthem would have to last 2:07 for the over to hit in this case. That is certainly a possibility, but it's noteworthy that anthem performances have surpassed that length just five times in the last 15 Super Bowls. That's part of why our own Sloan Piva is favoring the under on this bet.

Still, it's notable that the over/under number has risen by about seven seconds since betting began. That means there are bettors who are very confident that Stapleton's anthem is going to be a long one.
