Are the Kansas City Chiefs playing a must-win game on Sunday night?
The Chiefs aren't used to must-win games outside of January, but with five games remaining, their playoff chances are getting more worrisome by the week.
After losing to the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving, the Chiefs were dealt another blow three days later when both the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars won, pushing Kansas City a full two games out of the playoff picture. The Bills and Jaguars also have wins over the Chiefs, complicating Kansas City's path back to a wild-card spot.
One team now ahead of the Chiefs in the wild-card standings is the Houston Texans, who have won seven of their last nine games and are knocking down the door in the AFC South. Not only would a win improve the Texans' chances in both races, but it would effectively give Houston a three-game advantage over the Chiefs in the wild-card race thanks to the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Even as the Chiefs struggle, "Sunday Night Football" should be a heavyweight battle between a talented offense and a dominant defense. Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City's offense impressed against Dallas, while Houston's defense continues to wreck some of the AFC's better offenses. The winner will emerge much better positioned in the AFC, even if there is still plenty of work to do to be a playoff team.
