Start or sit Javonte Williams in fantasy football? Making a Cowboys RB lineup decision for Thursday NIght Football vs. Eagles image

It's always tempting to get those Thursday Night Football players into your fantasy football lineup.

It's a primetime, standalone game. You can tune in and watch your guy rack up the points, like this Thursday, when the Dallas Cowboys open the season against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Well, or you can turn on the game and watch your guy put up a clunker and set you up for a bad Week 1 to begin the season.

There are obvious choices for this initial Thursday game. If you have Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb or George Pickens, you're probably starting them. The same is true for Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, Jalen Hurts and Devonta Smith.

The Dallas RB room is a lot more confusing, though. Here, we break down Javonte Williams:

Should I start or sit Javonte Williams in Week 1 for Cowboys vs. Eagles?

In most leagues, Javonte Williams is probably a sit for Week 1.

There's a lot of uncertainty in the Cowboys' backfield.

Not only did they bring in Williams as a free agent. They also signed Miles Sanders.

Then, in the fifth round, they drafted blazing Texas RB Jaydon Blue, who is a popular sleeper that might take touches from Williams at some point.

In The Sporting News' weekly start-sit column by Vinnie Iyer, he lists Williams as a sit.

"The Eagles should contain him as Dallas' best option as they pull away at some point in the opener," Iyer wrote.

Williams seems to lack the upside that you want from  a guy playing in the first game of the week. The Cowboys are much more likely to throw for touchdowns than run them in, it seems, and Williams isn't a huge yards per carry player at this point.

One note: If you decide to start Williams anyway, put him in a RB spot. It's better to leave your FLEX spot open for later in the week in the case of any unexpected injuries or decisions to be made.

Williams is probably fair to start in 16- or 20-team leagues, but in your standard 10- or 12-team formats, it's probably best to leave him on the bench.
