Patriots release $24 million starter in surprising move image

On Friday, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the New England Patriots are releasing veteran safety Jabrill Peppers. The move is a part of a flurry of roster decisions to trim down the roster to 53 players.

The move is a little surprising since the Michigan alum had $4.32 million in guaranteed money remaining on his contract. The Patriots signed him to a three-year, $24 million contract. In his time with the Patriots, Peppers was a decorated defender with over 500 career tackles, seven interceptions, six forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.

Now, either Peppers can renegotiate a return deal or find his way to someplace else. Given his experience, there will be some teams that will like to use the veteran safety. It remains to be seen where the safety will head next while still under guaranteed contract obligations.

Meanwhile, the Patriots have been strategic with their decisions regarding the 53-man active roster. They have leaned towards younger talent and versatility while preserving cap flexibility.

Peppers' last season was marred by legal troubles

Jabrill Peppers' past season was marred by legal troubles and injury concerns. In October, he was arrested on domestic violence and drug possession charges, leading him to be placed on the NFL's commissioner's exempt list.

By next month, he was reinstated and returned to action before a hamstring injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

Peppers has maintained his innocence against the charges throughout the legal process. Earlier this year in July, he was acquitted through a jury trial in Boston for assault and battery charges.
