Pat Surtain II's journey to being arguably the best cornerback in the NFL began when he was born into a football family.

The Denver Broncos cornerback has been racking up Pro Bowls, All-Pro honors and even won the 2024 Defensive Player of the Year award already in his young career. While there are many factors to Surtian II's success, one of the biggest is being able to learn from his father, a former NFL corner himself.

Being able to grow up around the game of football certainly allowed Surtain the chance to take in the sport in a way most players couldn't. Here's a breakdown of how Surtain's family played a role in his development.

Pat Surtain II dad: Patrick Surtain Sr.

Patrick Surtain Sr. Was a strong defensive back in his own right, playing 11 years in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs. Surtain made three Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams during his career, producing 37 career interceptions in 163 games.

When Surtain II was born, Surtain Sr. Was in just his third season in the NFL, so the younger Surtain grew up around the game.

"I can remember him being at training camp practice with the Dolphins and really just starting to walk," Surtain Sr. Told Sports Illustrated's Mitch Goldich. "Him running on the field with a football."

Surtain explained that he didn't push his son into becoming a football player, instead leading Pat II discover his love of the game on his own.

"I didn't push him into it, but I wanted him to be around what I was doing," Surtain said, via DenverBroncos.com. "He gradually leaned toward it. I'm glad that he did. I'm glad that I took him out there when he was a year old. … He didn't know what was going on [at that young age], but he wanted me to throw the ball with him all the time."

While Surtain himself was a respectable defensive back, he transitioned into coaching after he retired. Therefore it's no surprise that his son followed in his footsteps.

"Very early on we would go out there and we would do DB drills," Surtain Sr. Said, via Sports Illustrated. "So I knew eventually he would play on that side of the ball. As he started maturing into his body, it just came naturally. I knew that the fundamentals were there from early on, and he just excelled at it."
