President Donald Trump made an appearance at Sunday's Week 10 matchup between the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions.

Participating in a ceremony for the NFL's Salute to Service initiative, Trump also proceeded to make an appearance on Fox's broadcast of the game in Landover, Maryland. Just days prior, reporting from ESPN indicated that the president was interested in having the Commanders' new stadium named after him when it's built.

On his Fox broadcast interview alongside Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma, Trump discussed his brief football career in his youth, offered some play-by-play during a Commanders touchdown, and answered Vilma's question about how the United States is doing as of November 2025.

Why was Trump booed at Commanders game?

Trump addressed the crowd at Northwest Stadium for the Salute to Service ceremony, reading out the military Oath of Enlistment to swear in new troops. As he was speaking and on the Jumbotron, the crowd in Landover was heard booing.

Earlier in the week, ESPN reported that Trump wants the Commanders' new stadium, scheduled to open in 2030, named after him.

"That would be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told ESPN.

Following that news, Trump made his appearance at the Commanders' Week 10 game, hearing boos when speaking for the ceremony.

Highlights from Trump interview

In the third quarter of Sunday's game, Trump joined Fox's broadcast team of Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma for an interview.

The president said it was "an honor" to swear in new troops in the Salute to Service ceremony.

One of the first things he discussed was also when he used to play football, telling the broadcast he used to play tight end at New York Military Academy.

"I mean it was not quite football like this... We had a quarterback who didn't have a very strong arm. I would say 10 yards was a long pass," Trump said. "I loved it. I actually love playing football."

Trump thoughts on NFL

During his appearance, Trump also spoke on his appreciation for the New York Jets and New York Giants growing up, also saying Jets owner Woody Johnson "is a great guy."

Chatting with Vilma, a Super Bowl champion for the Saints during his playing career, Trump said Drew Brees was "accurate, and he knew how to win."

"It was like throwing darts," Trump said of Brees. "He threw a ball that you could catch."

Later on, Trump said that one can "equate sports with life" with a person having to triumph through the issues they face. Vilma then asked him how he thought the country was doing.

"We're doing great," Trump said. "We're doing great, just like [the Commanders] have to do great right now."

The president also said he's "involved" in getting all of the approvals for Washington's upcoming new stadium.

Trump gives play-by-play for Deebo Samuel touchdown

Albert also asked Trump if he wanted to try some play-by-play, to which he first spoke to the Commanders' quarterback situation. He said the second-string, Marcus Mariota, "is a very good quarterback," while the injured Jayden Daniels "has the potential to be a great quarterback, he's got to stop the injuries somehow."

At that time, the Commanders were in the red zone, prompting Trump to say it would be "a very important couple of plays."

He continued the play-by-play, giving out a "Second and seven, we'll see what happens.... Whoa," when the Commanders ran it up the middle.

"They have to get a touchdown," Trump said on 3rd & 4. 

Soon after, when Washington went for it on fourth down. Deebo Samuel scored a touchdown, and Trump said "there we go."

"That was very important. Got a little ways to go yet," Trump said.
