Justin Fields has a big fan in his New York Jets teammate, Sauce Gardner.
Gardner was on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Wednesday and couldn't say enough good things about the new Jets signal-caller.
"We got a new dawg in town, we've got Justin Fields. He's a dawg. I can just tell that he's locked in in terms of tape, the playbook, everything," Gardner said. "He gets to the facility early, and he's one of the last ones to leave. He's really been dialed in."
Gardner went on to note that Fields made some throws at OTAs that caught him off guard and impressed him. The two-time Pro Bowler added that Fields made throws other quarterbacks simply can't, and even compared Fields to Aaron Rodgers.
"He made a few throws in OTAs where I was like 'Yo, I did not know he was capable of making this throw,'" Gardner said. "There's only a certain amount of QBs that can make these throws. I'm talking about his throws are like Aaron Rodgers type of level.
"He's always been a talented athlete and QB. I remember going against him with the Steelers & we had to change the whole game plan, & he didn't even play that game, Russ was the starter, so we went back to the other game plan like the night before," Gardner concluded.
Fields is entering a massively important season for his career. After failing to cement himself as "the guy" in Chicago and Pittsburgh, this could be the last chance Fields gets to do so in the NFL.
He's not going to have a ton of time to get it done, either. Fields is only on a two-year deal and it wouldn't be at all shocking to see the Jets take his future replacement in the 2026 NFL draft if Fields struggles at all in Year 1.
But if Fields is as good as Gardner says he is, he could prove to be the long-term answer in New York.
