The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported on Monday that the New York Jets would be switching quarterbacks, going from Justin Fields to veteran Tyrod Taylor.
The move came with little surprise, as Fields' play in recent weeks (and most of the season) warranted a change under center.
But it's obvious Fields has the respect and support of his teammates within the Jets locker room, as evidenced by the way players who have spent time with him talk about his demeanor and mindset.
Jeremy Ruckert has his former Ohio State teammates back
When asked why it's been so difficult for Fields to perform in the Jets offense, tight end Jeremy Ruckert, who was teammates with Fields at Ohio State, gave his support for his quarterback.
"That's my guy. Not really sure the exact things, just I know how much he cares about us, how much he puts on the line every day. It stinks to be a part of the... I take it personal, all the hate, all the talking that goes towards him. I take it personal because I'm one of the guys that takes the field with him," said Ruckert.
"Wish we could do a better job to help him out, but he's just a true professional. Not going to change how I feel about him. I'm sure he'll be ready to go when his times come."
Ruckert obviously feels bad for his former Buckeye teammate, but understands the nature of the business.
The fact of the matter is, Fields' play warrants his benching, and Taylor will get his shot to turn the offense around when the Jets take on the Baltimore Ravens this upcoming weekend.
