The main roster-related question looming over the New York Jets heading into the offseason is what the team is going to do at quarterback. But, they also face a similar question at running back.
Breece Hall has been New York’s starter in the backfield for the past three seasons, but he’s headed for unrestricted free agency over the offseason, and there’s no guarantee that he’ll be back with the Jets.
Jets listed as ideal landing spot for Javonte Williams
If Hall does ultimately sign elsewhere, the Jets will need to identify a replacement. Perhaps they could steal a back from the Dallas Cowboys to fill the role.
That’s not out of the realm of possibility, as the Jets were recently listed as an ideal landing spot for Cowboys running back Javonte Williams by Alex Kay of Bleacher Report, who projected Williams to sign with New York on a three-year, $20 million deal.
“Dallas won't have the flexibility to issue a large contract to Williams, but plenty of other teams could,” Kay wrote. “The New York Jets make plenty of sense as a landing spot for the five-year veteran. Gang Green will likely be in the market for a Breece Hall replacement this spring and could replicate a good chunk of their star's production at a cheaper cost via Williams.”
In the same article, Kay predicts that Hall will sign a four-year, $41 million deal with the Houston Texans in free agency.
At 25 years old, Williams should still have plenty of gas left in his tank, and he could potentially serve as the starting back in New York throughout the life of a three-year contract, if he were to sign such a deal.
The Jets will also have other options in free agency, so there’s no guarantee that they’ll go with Williams, but it is an intriguing pairing on paper.
