Jets' benching Justin Fields for Tyrod Taylor not expected to be temporary decision image

TL;DR

  • The New York Jets are benching quarterback Justin Fields for Tyrod Taylor due to poor performance.
  • This quarterback change is expected to be permanent for the remainder of the season.
  • The Jets aim to evaluate young receivers and give them more opportunities with Taylor starting.
  • The decision reflects the Jets' focus on player development during a lost season.

The New York Jets, after a brutal Week 11 performance from Justin Fields, are benching the $40 million quarterback and making the switch to veteran Tyrod Taylor.

The Jets had been contemplating this change for weeks, almost making the switch for Their Week 8 matchup versus the Cincinnati Bengals. Despite this significant decision, the question remains: how long will Taylor hold onto the starting quarterback position for The Jets?

ESPN's Dan Graziano reports that the Jets aren't taking the decision to bench Fields lightly. Aaron Glenn and the Jets are making this change not only for Week 12 but for the remainder of the season.

The Jets won't find a quick fix by Benching Justin Fields.

"The move is not expected to be temporary." Graziano writes. "Unless Taylor gets injured (which he has some history of doing), I don't get the sense the Jets will go back to Fields this season."

Taylor is taking over as the starter in New York, a change that follows nine weeks with Fields in the role and is expected to be permanent.

There are a few reasons why the Jets made this decision. While the struggles of Fields as a passer are a clear reason why, the Jets also want to see what their young receivers look like.

Fields' starting role means limited opportunities for Adonai Mitchell, John Metchie, and Mason Taylor. However, Taylor's presence should ensure they receive a respectable amount of action weekly.

The Jets are in the middle of a lost season at 2-8, and especially after their sell-off at the trade deadline, there's no reason not to get a look at the young players on the roster.

The Jets plan to keep Fields on the bench and Taylor as their starting quarterback for the remainder of the 2025 season, unless injuries occur.

After nine starts, the Justin Fields era in New York is concluding, with three of his most recent four contests falling below 55 passing yards.
