Justin Fields has been benched by the New York Jets, as Dianna Russini reported on Monday, but Aaron Glenn made the move official at his press conference on Wednesday.
Tyrod Taylor will start for New York when they take on the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, with the veteran quarterback getting his second start of the season, the first coming in Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
But what will Fields be doing on Sunday? Has he been relegated to the emergency third-string quarterback, or will he serve as the No. 2 behind Taylor?
Justin Fields to serve as QB2 against the Ravens
According to The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt, Glenn said Fields will serve as the backup on Sunday.
"Justin Fields will be the No. 2 quarterback this week, Aaron Glenn said."
While the answer may have been obvious to some, there was speculation this week that Fields could drop all the way to third string, with rookie quarterback Brady Cook elevated to the backup spot.
Evidently, Cook, an undrafted free agent out of Missouri, is not yet ready for such a role.
When asked about the rookie, Glenn had positive words but declined to answer whether or not we would see him at some point down the stretch.
"Still developing. There's been a plan for him from the very beginning. I want to make sure we do what's right for him. Who knows, we'll see what happens as the season progresses. I'm not promising anything. But he knows exactly what his role is when it comes to this team."
For now, Taylor is the starter, while Fields remains active in case the veteran gets injured.
