The New York Jets are entering yet another offseason full of question marks and certain change. After going 3-14, the Jets will likely have a new quarterback under center for the fourth consecutive year, as they once again failed to find a long-term answer at the position.
It didn't come without trying, though. After the Aaron Rodgers experiment yielded a 5-12 record in 2024, the Jets signed former Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract with $30 million guaranteed. This came after Fields went 4-2 as the Steelers' starter in 2024, totaling 10 touchdowns and just one interception. However, Fields failed to make a lasting impression as a starter, going 2-7 with just 1,259 yards passing and seven touchdowns. Because of this, Over The Cap labels Fields as one of the top cut candidates in the NFL this offseason.
Fields has a guaranteed salary of $10 million in 2026, as well as $20 million in total cash. New York is all but certainly bringing in a new signal-caller. Whether that be through the draft, via free agency/trade, or a combination of both, it feels like Fields' days with the Jets are numbered.
