The New York Giants made their decision clear during Round 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft.
After going with the best player available in Abdul Carter at No. 3 overall, the Giants then traded back into the first round later Thursday night, grabbing Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart.
The decision to go with Dart over Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, who still hasn't been drafted entering Day 3, was a controversial one.
However, a report from Todd McShay of The Ringer may explain why the Giants opted to go with Dart over Sanders, who reportedly had a bad private workout with head coach Brian Daboll.
"Shedeur didn’t have a great interview with Brian Daboll in a private visit,” McShay said via The Daily News. “An install package came in. Preparation wasn’t there for it. [He] got called out on it. Didn’t like that. Brian didn’t appreciate him not liking it.”
Once considered to be a target for the Giants at No. 3 overall, the slide Sanders has endured is arguably the most notable in recent memory, especially given the expectations throughout the pre-draft process.
The addition of Dart gives the Giants some time to craft his game for the NFL. He won't be expected to start right away and while there's no guarantee this regime will be around in 2026, it's becoming clear New York wanted to avoid any distractions that came with drafting Sanders.
It will be interesting to see where Sanders ultimately lands, but the Giants will be forever linked to him as one of the teams that passed.
Only time will tell whether that was the correct decision.
