A lot of New York Giants fans were looking forward to something different at the quarterback position to begin the 2025 season with Russell Wilson against the Washington Commanders. Well, the Giants offense looked very pitiful once again in a 21-6 loss against the Commanders.
There is a reason why this offense has look horrendous under the regime of head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen over the last couple of seasons. A lot of it has to do with the offensive line play. Also, Wilson did not look good on Sunday by completing 17-of-37 passes for 168 yards. Is it already time for the Giants to start rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys?
NFL Insider Believes It Is Not an Overreaction That New York Giants Quarterback Jaxson Dart Will Start by the End of September
When the clock hit zero in the Giants and Commanders game on Sunday afternoon, everyone couldn't wait to pounce on the topic if the Giants should start Dart in Week 2 over Wilson. Well, a lot of people have already chimed in on the conversation.
ESPN's Dan Graziano believes that it is not an overreaction that Dart is going to be the starting quarterback for New York by the end of September. Graziano said,
"Giants coach Brian Daboll doesn't want to be pressured into starting Dart, his first-round rookie quarterback, before he's ready. Daboll doesn't want Dart to feel that pressure, either. But when asked after the game whether Wilson would start next week in Dallas, Daboll wasn't definitive.
What we know is that the Giants made Dart their No. 2 quarterback Sunday, which means they trusted him to go into the game and run their offense if something had happened to Wilson. We also know they've worked with Dart on some specific packages (but those were implemented Sunday) that would take advantage of his running ability. Dart looked fantastic in the preseason, and though the regular season is a different story and the Giants have a daunting early schedule, his athleticism would potentially add some juice that Wilson doesn't offer at this point in his career.
Dart will start sooner or later. Daboll and the Giants' coaches have been methodical about their development plan for him and do not want to accelerate it because the offense is struggling. But Dart might be the better option now. And perhaps he could handle the responsibility."
Well, there are Giants fans who do not want to see Dart play until Andrew Thomas is healthy. That is a valid argue in order for the rookie to not be ruined. With that being said, Dart is the last lifeline for Daboll and Schoen to survive past this season as head coach and general manager. New York needs to win games in 2025.
They can't wait for winning results, and it needs to happen now. Dart was impressive in the preseason, and the Giants may not have a choice but to start the rookie for the remainder of the 2025 NFL season. If he does not play well, then Daboll and Schoen will be fired, and the Giants will have to find a new head coach and a new general manager for the 2026 season and start another rebuild.
The Giants traded up in the 2025 NFL Draft to draft Dart in the first round. There was a reason why he was named the backup over Jameis Winston before the 2025 NFL season started. Even though it is only one game in the 2025 season, the same results from the offense from a season ago appear to be showing. The last sense of hope for this regime is for them to start Dart and hopefully he will click. If not, another tear down is in order after the 2025 NFL season.
