New York Giants owner John Mara has been hesitant to pull the trigger on firing head coach Brian Daboll. Apparently, after an embarrassing second-half collapse in a 33-32 loss to the Denver Broncos at Empower Field on October 19, the Giants’ brain trust was ready to pull the trigger on Daboll’s firing. Something changed by the time the team got off the plane from Denver, though.
WFAN’s Shaun Morash heard as much from his source and revealed the bombshell report on Friday, which noted that general manager Joe Schoen didn’t have the power to make that call in that moment.
“I’ve done some digging around and I’ve now gotten this from multiple people I trust, which is why I’m going to come here with it. The Giants were firing Brian Daboll off the plane after the collapse in Denver. He was fired. Ownership got together and cooler heads prevailed. They decided not to fire Brian Daboll off the plane in Denver,” Morash wrote.
“In the immediacy of that collapse, the decision to throw on third-and-5, like (co-host) Tiki (Barber) had crushed after that game, apparently that was enough from people of importance with the Giants that he was fired off the plane in Denver and cooler heads have prevailed, which has now led to stories about the split ticket. Brian Daboll is as good as gone and was basically gone two weeks ago if not for somebody stepping up within ownership and calming that down.
“Making the decision to fire him was not Joe Schoen in that moment, but you could surmise from there... Ownership.”
Daboll’s time in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is running out, which is unfortunate because if he had Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo fully healthy, things might be different at this point of the season, record-wise.
Ultimately, though, hiring Shane Bowen has been a misfire for Daboll, so it’s not as though all of their losses would automatically be wins. The situation he’s overseen is behind nearly across the board, injuries be damned.
With a strong leader in Jaxson Dart under center and exciting skill-position players, the future is bright. Nailing the right coaching hire, if Schoen even has that chance, given his stubbornness in backing Daboll, could immediately turn things around in the Tri-State Area.
