The New York Giants have officially made the switch from Russell Wilson to Jaxson Dart.
After reports stated that the Giants were turning to their rookie quarterback after an 0-3 start, head coach Brian Daboll confirmed the move on Wednesday.
"So, in terms of the quarterback situation, I met both with Russ yesterday and Jaxson privately," Daboll said. "And Russ was nothing but a pro, which I expect him to be. It's my decision, we're going with Jaxson. We're going to get him ready to play this week and the remainder of the season. He's going to do everything he can and Russ will be the backup."
The popular opinion has been that Daboll is making the switch to save his job, which is in serious danger.
However, Daboll said that is not the case and instead gave two different reasons for going to Dart. First, Daboll said it was because of the issues on offense, and then he said it was because Dart was simply ready to play.
"It's a long season. We've had three games. Haven't put it together all collectively. Made the decision to play Jaxson," Daboll said, per Dan Duggan of The Athletic.
“I don't think any rookie QB is ever just ready to play. You put him in there because you think that he's done enough to show you that he can go out there and compete, and he's done that every step of the way. That's why I made the decision," Daboll added, according to Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic.
Dart is Daboll's and general manager Joe Schoen's last hope to keep their jobs and that is likely at the root of this decision, no matter what Daboll says.
If Wilson was playing well and the Giants were better than 0-3, the move wouldn't have happened this soon.
Putting that aside for now, making the switch makes sense, as the Giants are going nowhere fast and Wilson simply made it impossible to justify keeping him as the starter after what we saw in Week 3.
If Dart plays well and the Giants improve, that might just be enough for Daboll and Schoen to stick around beyond 2025.
