Cam Skattebo's season is over, and nothing will change that for the New York Giants' rookie running back.

But as new reports come out about Skattebo's injury, the news gets even more painful.

Skattebo was initially reported to have dislocated his ankle in the Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. That's what was visually evident on the field when an awkward tackle left Skattebo's right ankle at an unnatural angle.

There was more to the injury than just the dislocated ankle, though.

On Wednesday morning, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Skattebo also had a fibula fracture and a deltoid ligament rupture.

"Surgery was right away to close the wound," Rapoport wrote, explaining why Skattebo had to stay in Philadelphia after the game to have the medical work done at Penn Presbyterian.

The good news for the Giants comes in Rapoport's last sentence: "NYG expects him back for the offseason program."

This season, now at 2-6, is likely a lost cause for the Giants. But because of Skattebo and rookie QB Jaxson Dart, the future looks bright.

This injury had the potential to lessen that optimism, and there will still have to be proof that Skattebo is back to his normal self after the nasty injury. It certainly sounds like a lot to recover from, but running backs in the modern NFL have come back from all sorts of injuries thanks to modern medicine and rehabilitation techniques.

Skattebo got quite hurt on Sunday. But it sounds like he'll be just fine when he's able to make it all the way back to full health.
