The expectation has been that New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh will hire his former offensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens, Todd Monken, to the same role.
According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Monken is viewed as one of the "leading candidates" to be the Giants' offensive coordinator.
However, Monken is also drawing interest for head-coach jobs, and he's now slated to have a second interview with the Cleveland Browns, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, which means he's a finalist for the role and has a legit chance to land it.
"Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken will interview with the Browns in-person Tuesday, per source. This is Monken’s second interview with the team," Fowler reported on Sunday morning.
As of this moment, it would appear that the Browns are the only legit threat to the Harbaugh's hopes of bringing Monken aboard.
This second interview is obviously bad news for Harbaugh and the Giants, as chances are Monken will prefer taking a head-coach job over remaining as Harbaugh's offensive coordinator if the opportunity presents itself.
If that happens, Harbaugh would have to go back to the drawing board and find someone else to take the role.
It is fair to point out, however, that the Browns have a messy situation for any coach to take over. Knowing that, Monken may not want his first job to be at a place where he's much more likely to fail than succeed.
Taking the Giants job instead could also raise Monken's profile if he can have success with quarterback Jaxson Dart and New York's offense, which could very well happen given the young, promising talent he'll have to work with in Dart, wideout Malik Nabers, running back Cam Skattebo and others.
Then again, Monken may want to strike while the iron is hot when it comes to interest in him as a head coach, and we know head-coach opportunities in the NFL don't grow on trees.
This will be a fascinating situation to watch, and we could see a resolution as soon as next week.
