The New York Giants fired Brian Daboll on Monday, and it took no time for names all over the football world to hit the rumor mill as to who will be the next headman in East Rutherford, New Jersey. From Bill Belichick to Lane Kiffin, to Mike Kafka earning the job during his interim stint, fans heard it all in the aftermath of Daboll’s dismissal.
“All” being the operative word there.
Former Dallas Morning News and New York Daily News reporter Gary Myers pitched Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who is currently suing the Giants organization over conducting a faux interview to meet quota for the Rooney Rule, as a potential Daboll replacement.
Myers pondered on if there would be a settlement in the ongoing lawsuit, which also names the NFL, Houston Texans, and Denver Broncos as defendants, should Big Blue and Flores reach an agreement to make him a head coach.
“I want to mention a very interesting name as potential Giants candidate: Vikings DC Brian Flores. He's a tough guy, he's from Brooklyn, was Dolphins HC from 2019-2021 and interviewed for Giants job that went to Daboll in 2022. BUT...he's currently suing NFL, Giants, Broncos and Texans over discriminatory hiring practices. Does that eliminate him from consideration for Giants job? Does it settle the lawsuit if they hire him? Giants have never had an African-American head coach,” Myers wrote on X.
Flores probably wouldn’t want the lawsuit to be settled that way. It’d make the whole ordeal about him personally and not about the injustices of not giving minority coaches a real chance to earn jobs.
Whether or not he’d shut the door on the Giants completely is a different story. It’s undeniably a great opportunity, and Flores has only had one coaching opportunity, with the Miami Dolphins from 2019-2021, that didn’t go well.
New York should have better options who aren’t suing them, though, so this may be a rumor that starts and ends with Myers’ thinking out loud.
