The New York Giants added some space to the salary cap with a necessary move Thursday.

The team reportedly restructured the contract of star edge rusher Brian Burns, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Yates reported that the Giants converted $16 million of Burns base salary into a signing bonus, freeing up roughly $12 million in salary-cap space.

This move helped them get No. 3 overall pick Abdul Carter under contract following the draft, and it should help them make any other moves throughout the roster as OTAs approach.

It's not a shock that the Giants chose Burns as a restructure candidate. He still has three years left on the $141 million deal he signed last offseason.

This gives Burns more guaranteed money while the Giants are able to spread the converted money over the span of the contract rather than all up front.

Burns had a solid first season with the Giants, posting 8.5 sacks, 18 quarterback hits and 17 tackles for loss. His 61 total pressures were tied for the 13th-most among edge rushers, per Pro Football Focus.
