Patriots cutting Stefon Diggs decision possibly could pay him none of his $69 million contract image

The start of Stefon Diggs' tenure with the New England Patriots hasn't been perfect.

He's still working his way back from a torn ACL, and in the meantime, he has skipped OTAs to have quite the boat party.

That has officially raised doubts among many Pats fans as to whether Diggs is the best fit in their building.

According to extensive reporting from Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, New England has an out.

You can read Florio's full report here, where he examines the minutia of Diggs' three-year, $69 million contract.

But we're most interested in the conclusions Florio draws.

"Here’s the point," Florio writes. "It’s possible the Patriots have only paid Diggs $4 million, if that much. If Diggs has not yet passed the full and final physical that clears him to practice and play in 2025 (and the absence of news that he has passed a full and final physical strongly suggests he has not), there’s an opening to turn that three-year, $69 million contract into nothing at all."

Florio writes earlier that Diggs could always file a grievance if it appears the Patriots use a failed physical designation to release him for other motives.

But even that would result in some kind of grievance payment a lot less than $69 million.

In reality, the Patriots need the Diggs deal to work out. Drake Maye needs a true WR1.

But if things keep going south, New England may have an escape hatch.
