Vikings sign new QB, signaling bad J.J. McCarthy injury news and future outlook image

TL;DR

  • Minnesota Vikings may need a new quarterback for Week 13 due to J.J. McCarthy's concussion.
  • Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer would start if McCarthy misses the Seattle Seahawks game.
  • The Vikings added quarterback Desmond Ridder to their practice squad on Thursday.
  • Ridder, previously with the Falcons and Raiders, brings NFL experience to the Vikings.

The Minnesota Vikings are trying to solve the quarterback position, both in the near term and long term.

This week's attention was on Thursday. The Vikings may require a new quarterback for Week 13. J.J. McCarthy is currently in concussion protocol.

If McCarthy misses the matchup with the Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota will start undrafted rookie Max Brosmer.

They would then likely promote practice squad QB John Wolford to be McCarthy's backup.

But the Vikings have added another quarterback to their roster on Thursday.

Reports indicate the Vikings have added Desmond Ridder to their practice squad. This move, bringing in another quarterback, doesn't bode well for McCarthy's health this week.

Ridder's NFL journey has been quite remarkable thus far. He was selected by the Falcons in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, coming from Cincinnati.

He played in four games during his first season, followed by 13 in his second, achieving an 8-9 win-loss record as the Falcons' starting quarterback. Nevertheless, they released him.

Ridder made one start in 2024, losing a game for the Raiders.

He has since been a practice squad candidate as multiple teams have kicked around the idea of Ridder.

He has 16 NFL TD passes compared to 14 interceptions and also has some mobility.

Ridder is still just 26 years old. Maybe he's set to be the latest Kevin O'Connell reclamation project.
