Zach Wilson is already on the third team of his young NFL career. And for his stint with the Miami Dolphins, the quarterback decided to make a number change.
Formerly wearing No. 2 during his time with the New York Jets, from the time he was taken second overall in the 2021 NFL Draft to an April 2024 trade that sent him to the Denver Broncos, Wilson is still awaiting his first starting opportunities since his time in green and white.
While Wilson wore No. 4 during his time in Denver, after he signed with the Dolphins for the 2025 season as a backup to Tua Tagovailoa, he chose one of the more unique jersey numbers for a quarterback across the NFL.

What number is Zach Wilson?
Zach Wilson wears No. 0 for the Dolphins. That decision was significant for multiple reasons; not only has he become the second player to ever wear No. 0 in Miami (joining Braxton Berrios), but he's just the second quarterback in modern NFL history to wear that number in action, with the potential to become the first to wear it in game action.
After No. 0 once again became a wearable jersey number in the NFL in 2023, the first quarterback to originally wear it was Marcus Mariota with the Washington Commanders. However, Mariota later wound up switching to Nos. 18 and 8.
"Zero is something for me that's just a reminder," Mariota said at the time. "I'm in Year 10. People don't think I can do it anymore. It's just kind of a reminder everyday of 'nobody really gives you a chance.' And it's cool to be able to remind yourself."
So, Wilson has an opportunity become the first quarterback in modern NFL history to wear No. 0 in a game. While he's backing up Tagovailoa, who wears No. 1, it remains to be seen if Wilson will get any snaps this 2025 season.

Why is Zach Wilson No. 0?
Wilson was asked about his unique number choice before the 2025 season, but didn't seem to have put too much thought into it. Put simply, he said he thought it would be a "cool choice," per the Palm Beach Post.
“I’m like a single-digit guy and there weren’t many single digits available,” Wilson said in July, per the Palm Beach Post. “And I thought zero, I guess, was a cool choice. And I was like, I don’t know if any quarterbacks have really had zero before.”
