The process and the results don't have to work out the same way.

The Miami Dolphins' process was OK in the final two minutes against the Washington Commanders. The result, not so much.

The Dolphins chose to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line with 1:44 to play in a game tied 13-13.

Ollie Gordon was stuffed.

But there was some logic here.

Why did Dolphins go for it on 4th down?

The Dolphins had a couple thoughts in mind going for it.

The first was that a touchdown is simply better than a field goal. It increases the chances of actually winning the game, obviously.

Of course, the downside is getting stopped.

But if you're stopped at the 1, with Washington having no timeouts, it's tough for them to get into scoring range in time.

If Miami kicks a field goal, but then the Commanders return the kickoff out past the 30, they might actually have a better chance of going down to score a game-winning TD than coming from the 1 to get a field goal.

Mike McDaniel will certainly get asked about it afterward, but it did make some sense.
