Former Steeler and current Miami Dolphins safety Minkah Fitzpatrick had a scary moment Monday night when he went down with an apparent calf injury early in the fourth quarter of the Pittsburgh-Miami game.
As Fitzpatrick stayed on the ground, the reaction from the Steelers’ sideline said everything. Head coach Mike Tomlin, along with nearly the entire Pittsburgh defense, came out onto the field to check on him. It was a clear show of respect and care for a player who meant a lot to the organization and the people still wearing black and gold.
Miami later announced that Fitzpatrick was dealing with a calf injury and was questionable to return.
Fitzpatrick spent five seasons with the Steelers, from 2019 through 2023, after being traded to Pittsburgh early in the 2019 season. He quickly became a centerpiece of the defense and one of the most trusted players on the field.
During his time in Pittsburgh, Fitzpatrick was known for his big plays, leadership, and football smarts. He made multiple Pro Bowls, delivered countless momentum-changing interceptions, and helped lead a defense that was consistently among the league’s best. Just as important, he was extremely well-liked in the locker room and by the fan base.
That respect was still obvious Monday night. Even in a Dolphins uniform, Fitzpatrick was met with nothing but concern and support from his former coach and teammates. It was a reminder that some relationships in the NFL go beyond teams and jerseys.
For Steelers fans, it was also a reminder of how special Minkah Fitzpatrick’s time in Pittsburgh was—and why he’s still held in such high regard.
