NFL Network's Ian Rapoport broke the news on Wednesday that the Miami Dolphins would be benching quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after a poor start on Monday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers will get the starting nod when Miami hosts the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 16.
The question remained, however, who would serve as the Dolphins' No. 2 quarterback in the wake of Tagovailoa's benching?
Zach Wilson to remain QB2, Tua Tagovailoa demoted to QB3
In a continuing report from Rapoport , Zach Wilson will remain as the backup quarterback while Tagovailoa is demoted to the emergency third-string role.
"Coach Mike McDaniel confirms that Quinn Ewers will start and explains that Zach Wilson will be the backup QB. Tua Tagovailoa will be the emergency third QB," wrote Rapoport in a post on X.
It now seems unlikely that Tagovailoa will be seen on the field again this season, and maybe ever for the Dolphins.
Ewers, the former quarterback for the University of Texas, will have the opportunity to prove himself in his first career start against the Bengals.
In the unfortunate event that the seventh-round pick gets hurt, Wilson is next in line for Miami.
