After listening to Doug McCain on the Locked On Rams podcast talk about the changes on special teams, it became clear this could be the Achilles' heel of their season.
With the signings of Jake McQuaide and Harrison Mevis, the Rams hope that they’re taking a page out of Lady Irsay’s playbook and fixing a problem rather than putting a Band-Aid on it.
But the way it may look to some is merely putting a Band-Aid on it, because special teams coach Chase Blackburn will now have five kickers during his tenure on the team.
The craziest part about this whole change in plan for the Rams is that it comes up during one of your most hated rivals' weeks, the San Francisco 49ers.
Special teams have truly become the team's weak spot. From losing against the Philadelphia Eagles to losing to the 49ers in the first game, both times, special teams really made mistakes that ultimately cost them those games.
Those teams are competing for the Super Bowl, and if the Rams can’t get past them during the regular season, who is to say they can beat them when it counts in the playoffs?
If the Rams can win today and the special teams doesn’t hinder them in this game, there is no reason why McQuaide and Mevis won’t win their jobs respectively for the plain reason of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
If there is a complete difference in the kicking game and it’s accurate and it’s crisp, why would they not let the hot leg keep kicking? Hopefully, today is a blowout for the Rams, and they can continue this momentum they have going into the second half of the season.
